 IRRIGATION WORKS OF ANURADHAPURA PERIOD, AND THE KINGS

        Building of very large reservoirs instead of the small ones commenced during the period of King Wasabha. He initiated constructions of eleven tanks and twelve canals, according to Mahavamsa.

      Building the Elahera canal throwing a dam across Amban ganga was started by King Wasabha. Also this king had supposedly made tunnel water courses according to legends . He had devised such systems to supply water to the supplement water supply in expanding agricultural activity.

               Ii is said that King Mahasen built sixteen tanks and a large irrigation canal. Minneriya tank is the largest(image 4).Given below are the largest of other tanks he built he  besides the Minneriya tank.

 3. Kavudulu tank(image 7)

 4. Mahagalkadawala tank(image 8)

      King Mahasen worked to enlarge the Alahere canal which was originally started by King Wasabha, and directed it towards filling the Minneriya tank. King Mahasen was also called ‘God of Minneri’. He became very popular because of building Minneriya tank. The period of King Mahasen Is considered important as far as irrigation systems were concerned, because he worked very hard to give irrigation facilies to most of the dry zone.
