  •  King Datusena(455AD-473AD)


        King Datusena has built eighteen tanks and number of irrigation canals, as mentioned in the chronicles. Kala weva (image 9) was one of his greatest achievements. He also had enlarged achievements. He also had enlarged several small tanks. He built an irrigation canal called yodha  ela to direct water from Kala weva. Yodha Ela canal or Jayaganga, which was more than 50 mils long augmented the water supply in tanks at Anuradhapura and its environs such as Tissa, Abhaya weva Tanks. It irrigated an area of about 180 square miles. This canal was an amazing technological feat for its gradient in the first 17 miles of its length was a mere 6 inches to a mile.

   Yodha Weva tank in Mannar district on the back of Malwathu Oya is also attributed to King Dhatusena. The canal on Mahaweli River at Manimekhala (minipe) Is also attributed to this king.

  •  King Mugalan 2 (531AD-551AD)

 
       King Mugalan 2 is the next great tank builder after King Datusena.It is mentioned in the Mahawamsa that this King built three tanks namely Pathpahan weva,Dhana tank and Girithara weva. Pathpahan tank has been identified as Naccaduva tank (image 10)

 

  • King Agbo 1(571AD-604AD)

       It is mentioned in the Mahawamsa,that King Agbo built three tanks,Mamaduwa tank. The building of Kurudu tank is further confirmed by references in Poojawaliya and Rayawaliya.He only got it enlaged which was built by king Dhatnusea.

  •  King Agbo 2(604AD-614AD)

       The Kantale and Giritale (image 11) tanks are great works of King Agbo2. Kantale and Girithale had been fed by the Mahaweli River its tributaries.
